Our teeth are attached to bone by means of gums and periodontal tissues. poor oral hygiene, genetic factors and some other general diseases like diabetes can make the individual prone for gum diseases. regular dental visits and scaling at regular intervals can reduce the possibility of disease. Intially the disease will start from the gums. patient may experience bleeding while brushing. at this stage it is called as gingivitis if untreated the disease can affect the supporting periodontium and bone.
